Our Quilt Shop Is Filled With History

Tucked away in the heart of Maumee, Ohio, our shop, The Quilt Foundry, which is a local sewing and quilting shop... resides in the historic Buttergilt Building, one of northwest Ohio's oldest commercial structures. Constructed in the 1840s by Edward Mitchell, a native of Maine, this enduring building has witnessed the ebb and flow of the region's history. The Buttergilt Building was originally built as a factory for manufacturing butter tubs and wooden products. Its name is believed to be a nod to the butter-related products it once produced. It was also once used for the production of arsenic. In the late 19th century, the building was repurposed to house a chemical factory that manufactured arsenic, a toxic substance used in various industries like fly traps at the time.

Since the early 1980s, the Buttergilt Building has embraced a variety of tenants, with The Quilt Foundry being one of its most cherished occupants. Today, the building has kept much of its original appearance and materials, standing as a testament to the area's rich heritage. As possibly the area's oldest factory structure still in commercial use, it provides a unique and inspiring backdrop for quilting enthusiasts. Being part of this storied location adds a special touch to every visit, blending the art of quilting with the charm of Maumee's history.
